Scalloway reflections

Scalloway (old Norse : Skalavagr- Bay with large houses) was the original capital of Shetland until 1708. The last witches in Shetland were burned on Gallow Hill which over looks Scalloway.
It was an important place during WW2 as it was the base for the Shetland bus with many of the original building still standing, including the castle which was a store for ammunition. The construction started1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart, completed in 1607
